Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the language teaching job that you have recentely advertised in a newspaper.

I believe that I would be suitable for this position because I have not only an excellent experience in teaching, but I also have all the knowledge of French language. I could easily teach the basic concepts and grammar of this particular language as well as I can easily get along with children.

I can also do several other things for your family, if you would allow me, including teaching the moral values to children, and taking care of them while you are away. Additionally, my culinary skills are exceptional, so I can also do cooking for you whenever you need at a reasonable extra cost.

The main reason why I want to get this job is that nowadays, I am doing part-time studies. Also I would like to do a part-time job along with my education. So, I beleive that it would be a great opportuninty for me to earn an income.

I hope you will consider my job application, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Harpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain your teaching experience and French knowledge, offer childcare and cooking, and give your reason for seeking work alongside your studies. The purpose is clear and the details are relevant. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, “excellent experience in teaching” does not specify what or whom you have taught, and your ability to get along with children is asserted rather than supported with an example. Your reason for wanting the job focuses mainly on earning income, without explaining why this particular family or teaching French appeals to you. Adding one or two specific details would make the letter more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised clearly: the opening states your purpose, the following paragraphs cover suitability and additional help, and the final body paragraph explains your motivation. Linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “The main reason” help the reader follow the progression, and the closing is appropriate. This clear structure is a strength. To make the flow more natural, avoid stacking several ideas in one sentence, as in the list of moral guidance, childcare, and cooking. You could also connect your teaching experience more directly to your ability to work with children. Overall, the organisation is logical, though some transitions and links between supporting details could be more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “teaching,” “basic concepts and grammar,” “culinary skills,” and “part-time studies,” so the message is understandable and suited to the task. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “express my interest” and “consider my job application.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise: “all the knowledge of French language” and “excellent experience in teaching” do not sound natural, while “at a reasonable extra cost” may seem overly transactional in a letter to a family. Spelling errors such as “recentely,” “beleive,” and “opportuninty” also reduce accuracy. More natural collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen your vocabulary control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use both straightforward sentences and more complex forms, including “because” clauses, “not only…but also,” and the conditional “if you would allow me.” Most sentences communicate your meaning clearly, and punctuation generally supports the letter’s structure. Some grammatical patterns are not fully controlled, however. In “I have not only an excellent experience in teaching, but I also have…,” the paired construction is awkward and the noun phrase needs a different form. “As well as I can easily get along with children” is also not correctly integrated into the sentence. The sentence beginning “The main reason why…” is followed by several short statements that could be combined more effectively. Refining these structures would improve accuracy and range.
