Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Maam,
I am writing to express my interest in applying as a private language tutor to your children. As I came across your advertisement, I believe I am qualified for the job. I am a licensed professsional teacher and has eight years of relevant teaching experience handling young learners. In addition to this, I also hold a certificate in TEFL (Teaching English and Foreign Language).
Apart from teaching language, I am also knowledgeable in teaching several core subjects such as mathematics, science and history. I can always assist them with their assignments in this subjects and monitor their progress.
I am a foreign teacher and I just moved from this country last month. I work as a primary teacher during weekdays and I would want to find a part time job for weekends. Because of inflation rate in the Philippines, I need to find additional means to earn money to sustain my family's needs.
I hope to hear from you soon. If you have any questions, you can always contact me in this email.
Yours fathfully,
Hannah Rosemarie L. Alicaya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain your teaching qualifications and experience, offer help with other subjects and assignments, and give reasons for seeking the position. The details about being a licensed teacher with eight years’ experience and holding a TEFL certificate make your suitability clear. The offer to monitor the children’s progress also adds useful detail. However, the reasons for wanting the job focus mainly on needing extra income, and the reference to supporting your family does not explain why this particular role or teaching these children appeals to you. The statement that you moved from “this country” is also unclear in context. Develop these points with a more specific connection to the family and the year-long role to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the application, then covers your qualifications, additional help, and reasons for applying before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these main points, and phrases such as “In addition to this” and “Apart from teaching language” signal the progression. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the relationship between ideas in the final body paragraph is not fully clear: “I am a foreign teacher and I just moved from this country” is followed by your weekday work and financial motivation without explaining how these details connect to the advertised position. The reference in “this subjects” is also unclear. Use more precise transitions and make the links between your circumstances and your availability explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal application and includes relevant terms such as “licensed professional teacher,” “relevant teaching experience,” “TEFL,” and “monitor their progress.” These choices communicate your qualifications and the extra support you can offer. There are some inaccurate or awkward expressions that limit precision, including “applying as a private language tutor,” “handling young learners,” and “additional means to earn money.” Spelling and form errors such as “professsional” and “fathfully” also affect the impression of control, though the meaning remains clear. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording for your motivation and for the family’s needs would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately tailored.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the opening explanation beginning “As I came across your advertisement” and the sentence describing your weekday work and weekend availability. Most of the message remains easy to understand, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “I am a licensed … teacher and has eight years,” the subject requires “have,” and “in this subjects” should use the plural form “these subjects.” The sentence beginning “Because of inflation rate” is a fragment when separated from the preceding sentence; connect it to the main clause or recast it. There are also punctuation and spacing issues in “mathematics, science.” Review subject–verb agreement, demonstratives, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy while retaining your range.
