Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Smith,

With reference to your adverisement, I wanted to express my interest in teaching Urdu to your children. I am a native Urdu speaker and a certified Urdu teacher here in Pakistan, and I believe I can be right fit for this purpose.

I have been teaching Urdu at AX school for the past 10 years now. I have taught at various levels specially to primary stanard and have experience teaching Urdu to English speakers. As for myself, I am an advanced English speaker and hence would be able to interact with your children easily.

I am currently visiting Australia and would love to meet your family, this will help us exchange greetings and create a natural bond. I am looking to learn about the Australian culture and would love to interact with native Australians. This will make my trip memorable and I can start teaching once I am back to Pakistan.

Feel free to ask if you have questions for me.

Regards,

Saif

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the main purpose and give relevant reasons for applying: your native Urdu ability, teaching qualification and experience, plus your interest in Australian culture. However, the task asks what else you could do for the family, and this is not clearly answered. Offering to “exchange greetings and create a natural bond” describes a hoped-for relationship rather than a practical contribution, such as helping with meals or childcare. Your reasons for wanting the job are also somewhat unclear because you say you can “start teaching once I am back to Pakistan,” which conflicts with teaching the children in Australia for a year. Clarify your availability and develop each requested point more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your interest, explain your teaching background, then give personal reasons and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “As for myself” and “This will” connect ideas. Some progression is less effective, however: the final paragraph moves from meeting the family to cultural interests and then to returning to Pakistan, without explaining how these points fit together or resolve your availability. The closing is also rather abrupt after “Feel free to ask if you have questions for me.” Make the relationship between your plans and the family’s needs clearer, and use transitions that show the purpose of each idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the letter, including relevant terms such as “certified Urdu teacher,” “various levels,” “primary,” and “native Australians.” The meaning is generally clear, and your vocabulary suits a polite application. Some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “adverisement,” “stanard,” and “right fit.” A few expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “exchange greetings” and “start teaching once I am back to Pakistan.” Choose more idiomatic phrases and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe yourself as “well suited to the role,” and explain a practical contribution using specific language rather than a vague phrase about creating a bond.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most ideas remain easy to understand. The sentence beginning “I am a native Urdu speaker…” combines relevant information effectively, while “I have been teaching…” uses the present perfect appropriately for ongoing experience. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I believe I can be right fit,” the article is missing; “I am currently visiting Australia and would love to meet your family, this will help…” joins two independent clauses with a comma. The final sentence, “I can start teaching once I am back to Pakistan,” also creates an unclear time relationship. Separate the clauses with a full stop or conjunction, and review articles and sentence boundaries.
