Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr and Mrs,
Recently, I saw an advertisement you posted in Australian magazine that you are looking for someone who can teach French langauge to your two children for a year.
I am the most suitable candidate for this job because I was born in a city called Quebec which is situated in Canada where everyone speak French language. Therefore, I have a good control in this language. I have moved to Australia last year for my further studies in liturature in French langauge.
There is one more help that I can provide is that, I can cook for your children while you are away. I love cooking because it is my passion, and I understand the taste of children because I use to cook for my brother who is 8 years old whenever I get a free time. I can make good pancakes which is loved by most of the children.
I desperately want this job becasue I am planning to become a teacher in high school for a French langauge. Before, I do that I need work experience as a tutor. Therefore, I believe it is a great opportunity for me to start my career with this job.
Thank you for considering my application. Looking forward for a reply.
Kind regards,
Abhi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points clearly. You explain your suitability through your French-speaking background in Quebec and your literature studies, offer to cook for the children, and give a relevant career-based reason for wanting the position. The cooking example—making pancakes and having experience cooking for your younger brother—adds useful support. Your purpose remains clear throughout, and the closing is appropriate. To strengthen the response further, develop how your studies or experience would help you teach children, rather than relying mainly on being a native speaker. You could also make the offer to help the family more specific, for example by describing another practical responsibility you could take on alongside cooking.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with each body paragraph addressing a different part of the task. The progression from your background, to additional help, to your motivation is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “Before I do that” help show relationships between ideas, and the opening and closing make the format recognisable as a letter. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the sentence beginning “There is one more help that I can provide is that” is awkwardly constructed, which interrupts the flow. Aim for smoother transitions and clearer sentence framing—for example, “I could also help by cooking for your children.” This would preserve your logical organisation while making cohesion less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including relevant terms such as “suitable candidate,” “further studies,” “work experience,” and “tutor.” These choices communicate your background and motivation clearly. There are, however, some spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations, including “langauge,” “liturature,” “good control in this language,” and “a free time.” “Desperately want” also sounds overly intense for a polite job application. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of your vocabulary. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases, especially for describing language ability, availability, and professional motivation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “which,” and “whenever” to explain your reasons and experience. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence structure, tense, agreement, and articles. For example, “everyone speak French” needs subject–verb agreement, while “I have moved to Australia last year” combines the present perfect with a finished past-time expression. The construction “There is one more help that I can provide is that” also needs restructuring. Work on accurate verb forms and sentence patterns, and proofread articles and punctuation. More consistently accurate sentences would make your otherwise clear message easier to read.
