Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I hope this email finds you well. I'm writing this letter in response to the advertised position of language teacher for your children.

I currently live in Kenya, born and raised in and a Swahili native speaker.

Iam a certified language teacher with over 10 years experience.

I have prior experience working with children between the ages of 2 to 13 years. I have taught in both primary and secondary schools.

I'm therefore best suited for this opportunity as i have the relevant experience and knowledge of the language.

Aside from the work experience, i have immense love for children. I like to work with children, i'm patient and kind and know how to interact with children by aligning the interactions with their ages.

I will offer additional services like play time with the children, taking them to the park and alot of fun learning activities incorporated as part of the learning.

The reason i would like the job is because I love to work with childen and i have been looking for an excelllent opportunity such as this one. It will also be a good opportunity for me to experience the Australian culture as i contribute to teaching my own culture and sharing experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly. Your qualifications are relevant and specific: you identify yourself as a Swahili native speaker, a certified teacher with over ten years’ experience, and someone who has taught children aged two to thirteen. You also suggest useful family support, such as taking the children to the park and incorporating fun activities, and explain your interest in both working with children and experiencing Australian culture. These details make your suitability and motivation clear. To strengthen the response further, develop the additional help you could offer beyond activities with the children, and explain more specifically how your teaching experience would benefit this particular family. The ideas are relevant and supported, though some remain general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce your application, describe your experience, explain what you could offer the family, and give your reasons for applying. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these main points, and expressions such as “Aside from” and “The reason” guide the reader. However, the progression within the experience section is somewhat list-like, and the final paragraph combines your personal motivation with the cultural benefit without developing the connection between them. Some linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated references to loving or liking work with children. Group related details more deliberately and use a wider range of natural transitions so the letter flows less mechanically.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including relevant terms such as “certified language teacher,” “native speaker,” “patient,” and “incorporated.” These choices communicate your qualifications and proposed activities clearly. There are also some imprecise or informal expressions: “alot of fun learning activities” is less suitable for a formal application, while “best suited” makes a strong claim without explaining exactly why. Spelling slips such as “childen” and “excelllent” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise professional phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the activities as “engaging educational activities” and connect your experience directly to the children’s needs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Your writing includes both short statements and some longer structures, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several grammatical errors remain. “I currently live in Kenya, born and raised in” is an incomplete construction; write, for example, “I was born and raised in Kenya.” In “Iam a certified language teacher,” the missing space affects presentation, and “over 10 years experience” needs a possessive form: “over 10 years’ experience.” Capitalisation is inconsistent in “i,” and the sentence beginning “Aside from the work experience” runs together several clauses with commas. Use complete sentences, check verb forms and punctuation, and vary sentence patterns more accurately to improve control.
