Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I saw an advertisement that you need a Yoruba tutor for your children so that they can learn the basics of the language. I was born and raised in Lagos State in Nigeria, where one of the most spoken language is Yoruba. Also, I often communicate with my family, friends and relatives in my dialect, so I speak fluently and I understand the basics of the language.

I am aware that teaching children about the culture and tradition of a foreign country can help to broaden their horizons. As someone who has spent majority of my life in Nigeria, I can also teach them about relevant history, culture, values and the way of life of a typical Nigerian. I could also teach them how to prepare different delicacies that are popular in my country.

I need a part-time position like this to cater for my personal needs while I complete my Master's degree in Australia. Apart from the financial benefit I'll get from this role, it would be such a great honour to teach people about my local dialect and tradition.

I hope you consider my application and I look forward to a favourable response.

Yours faithfully,

Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain your suitability through your Nigerian background and fluent Yoruba, offer additional help with culture, history and cooking, and give personal and professional reasons for wanting the role. These details make your application relevant and your purpose clear. The supporting ideas are generally extended, particularly the link between teaching language and sharing Nigerian culture. To make the response more fully developed, connect your experience more directly to teaching children—for example, mention any teaching experience or how you would make lessons engaging and age-appropriate. Also, the opening says the advertisement seeks a Yoruba tutor, while the task describes teaching your language; naming Yoruba is clear, but a more direct application to the couple would strengthen the letter’s personal focus.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs that move logically from your language background, to what else you can offer, and then to your reasons for applying. The closing is appropriate, and linking expressions such as “Also,” “As someone who,” and “Apart from” help show relationships between ideas. This gives the reader a clear progression throughout. At times, however, the links are somewhat formulaic, and the first paragraph combines several related points without explicitly connecting them to your ability to teach. You could improve cohesion by using more precise references and transitions—for instance, explain how your regular use of Yoruba supports your teaching, then lead into the cultural activities you could provide.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “broaden their horizons,” “relevant history,” “personal needs,” and “favourable response.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and some phrases show an attempt to use less common language. However, a few expressions are imprecise or not fully natural in context: “one of the most spoken language” and “in my dialect” do not express your meaning as accurately as they could, while “teach them about relevant history” is rather general. “Tradition” is also repeated. Aim for more precise collocations and varied wording, such as describing Yoruba as widely spoken and referring to Nigerian customs or cultural traditions. This would add flexibility and improve naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “where one of the most spoken language is Yoruba” and the conditional construction “I could also teach them how to prepare…” Most sentences are easy to understand, and punctuation and paragraphing support the message. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “one of the most spoken language,” the noun should be plural; “I have spent majority of my life” needs an article before “majority”; and “I speak fluently and I understand” would be smoother with parallel phrasing or a linking conjunction. The contraction “I'll” is also less suitable for this formal letter. Check articles, agreement, and consistency of register, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
