Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this to apply the job offer.
Last monday I have seen advertisement you launched to get someone who can teach Amharic to your children.
and I feel this opportunity very impressive because currently I am in need of this kind of part time job which I can perform inline with my MSc education in college.
Moreover I grown up in Ethiopia where amharic is dominanetly spoken so,I am fluent in Amharic.I could teach your child all writing, listening, reading and speaking skills in best way. when I was there I had experience of teaching my language for foreign visitors in a specific class.
In addition to this, am very willing to share about culture of Ethiopia with your family like traditional foods and some of dances.I appreciate if you understand and give me a chance to teach my language to your children.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Kidist

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the main purpose by applying for the teaching role, explaining your fluency in Amharic and prior teaching experience, and describing what you could share with the family. Your reasons for wanting the job are also present: you need part-time work that fits around your MSc studies. However, several points are only briefly stated. For example, “I could teach your child all writing, listening, reading and speaking skills” does not explain how your experience would help the children learn, and the cultural activities are mentioned without detail. The opening and closing are appropriate, but a more direct, confident explanation of your suitability and a little development of each offer would make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter follows a generally understandable order: you introduce your application, explain your background and teaching experience, offer cultural activities, and close politely. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “In addition to this” help signal new points. However, the ideas are crowded together, with no clear paragraph breaks, and some transitions are awkward: the sentence beginning “and I feel this opportunity” starts as a continuation but is separated by a full stop. The sequence would be clearer if you used separate paragraphs for your motivation, qualifications, and additional help, and connected each idea with accurate, varied linking. Clearer sentence boundaries would also make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the task, including “fluent in Amharic,” “teaching,” “traditional foods,” and “MSc education,” so the reader can understand your main points. There is some attempt to use more specific language, such as “foreign visitors” and “part time job.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings are inaccurate, including “dominantly,” “impressive” for describing an opportunity, and “inline with.” These choices sometimes make the meaning less natural, even when it remains understandable. Aim to learn common collocations for applications and teaching, and check spelling carefully. More precise phrases would help you describe your experience and the activities you could offer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your letter communicates its main message, and you attempt to combine ideas using clauses such as “because currently I am in need…” and “where Amharic is…”. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and attempts at longer sentences are often inaccurate. Examples include “Last monday I have seen” and “Moreover I grown up,” where the verb forms are incorrect, as well as “I appreciate if you understand,” which needs a different clause structure. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and punctuation, such as beginning a new sentence with “and” after a full stop. Practise accurate past-tense forms and complete sentence patterns, then proofread for capitals, commas, and full stops.
