IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement from a couple, who live in Australia, for someone to teach their two children your language for a year. Write a letter to the couple. In your letter
- explain why you think you would be suitable for the job
- say what else you could do for the family
- give your reasons for wanting the job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing to let you know that I saw your Facebook advertisement for a tutor yesterday. I am writing to let you know that I can do this job.
To begin with, I am from India, belong from gujarati family. Since 1 year, I have been living in Australia on Markham Road. As per your requirement, I can teach the Gujarati language because my mother tongue is Gujarati. Moreover, I completed my bachelor's degree in this language. I have 2 years of childcare experience. As a consequence, I will give my full attention to your children.
Along with teaching, if you permit me, I will make Gujarati food and test it with them, so they can eat healthy food rather than junk food. I can also provide pick-up and drop-off service from school. The main reason behind this job is that, as an international student, I have to pay my tuition fees and rent. Therefore, I need money to survive in this country.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your feedback. Please let me know is you need any further documentation.
Yours faithfully,
Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain your suitability through your Gujarati background, degree and childcare experience; offer cooking and school transport; and give your financial reasons for applying. These details make the letter relevant and show the core of the next level of performance. However, some points are only briefly developed. For example, you say you will give the children your “full attention” but do not explain how your childcare experience would help you teach or care for them. The reason for wanting the job focuses on tuition and rent, with little about your interest in teaching or joining the family. Expanding these ideas and making the benefits to the couple more explicit would make the response more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the advertisement, describe your qualifications, offer additional help, and explain your motivation before closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “Along with teaching” help the reader follow the points. At times, however, the linking feels mechanical or the relationship between ideas is not fully clear. “As a consequence” does not naturally connect your childcare experience to giving the children attention, and the opening repeats “I am writing to let you know.” Use a more direct opening and connect each qualification to its practical benefit. This would make cohesion smoother and less dependent on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main information, including relevant terms such as “mother tongue,” “childcare experience,” and “tuition fees.” The language is generally understandable, but several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, which limits flexibility. For instance, “belong from gujarati family” and “test it with them” do not express your intended meaning naturally; “pick-up and drop-off service” is also rather formal for offering help to a family. Aim for accurate, natural phrases and check capitalization of “Gujarati.” A broader range of precise language for teaching, childcare and family support would strengthen the letter while keeping its tone appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “if,” and “so,” and the main message remains clear. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in sentence construction and question forms. For example, “Since 1 year, I have been living” uses an incorrect time expression, while “Please let me know is you need” has an incorrect clause structure. The opening also repeats the same sentence pattern, so the range is somewhat limited. Review prepositions and time expressions, and form indirect questions correctly—for example, “Please let me know if you need any further documentation.” More varied sentence patterns with careful proofreading would improve accuracy.
