Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir and Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Nidhi Vyas. I am writting this letter because i saw your advertisemnet regarding the language teacher position for your children.

I would like to ask you that is it still available? I am interested in that position. I am born and brought up in India and i believe that is the main reason that i can help you with this because i have an abundance amount of knowledge about the hindi language. In addition, I studied about hindi in my masters programe and at that time i was also trained about the teaching skills.

I can help with your children in that language and i also notice in advertisement that you are looking for teacher for one year and i believe that i can give more that to your children due to my gap year starting from the next month.I require this job is that i am looking for experince in the teaching.

I am looking for your replay and if possible we can also arrange a online meeting as per your avaibility. Thank you.

Best Regards,

Nidhi Vyas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You address the main purpose by expressing interest and explaining your Hindi background and relevant study: “I studied about Hindi in my masters programme” and received teaching training. However, the task’s three points are not all developed clearly. Your reasons for wanting the job are reduced to gaining teaching experience, while the claim that you can help the family beyond teaching is unclear (“I can give more that to your children”) and does not specify what else you could do. The opening question about whether the position is still available is relevant, but the letter would be more effective if you directly explained your suitability, offered practical additional help, and gave fuller reasons for applying. These omissions and limited development make the response only partially effective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure: an opening, paragraphs about your background and availability, and a polite closing. Linking expressions such as “In addition” and “I believe” help connect some points. However, progression is uneven, and ideas are sometimes joined without a clear relationship. For example, the sentence beginning “I can help with your children in that language” moves from teaching to the one-year period and then to your gap year and motivation, making the message difficult to follow. The paragraphing could also separate your qualifications, other help you can offer, and reasons for applying. Use clearer topic sentences and refer directly to the family’s needs so that each paragraph develops one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “advertisement,” “position,” “teaching skills,” and “availability,” and the reader can generally understand your purpose. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, such as “writting,” “advertisemnet,” “experince,” and “replay.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “an abundance amount of knowledge” and “I can give more that to your children” do not express your meaning clearly. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and a slightly more formal register. For instance, you could describe your “strong knowledge of Hindi” and say that you can “support the children with their studies” or “help with daily routines,” if accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including a reason clause with “because” and a sentence beginning “In addition.” The overall message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and verb forms recur. For example, “I would like to ask you that is it still available?” uses indirect-question word order incorrectly; write “I would like to ask whether it is still available.” “I am born and brought up in India” should be “I was born and brought up in India,” and “I require this job is that…” needs restructuring, such as “I am applying because…”. Capitalise “I” consistently, and check articles and punctuation, including “an online meeting.” More accurate control of these patterns would make your meaning clearer.
