Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hi, Sir,

I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to teach your two children your language for a year. I would be interested in this opportunity, as i believe i have the skills and experiences for this postition.

I am s fluent speaker of punjabi and hindi, and i also have good command of english. I have completed my bachelor's degree in English and am currently studying MBA . I am patient, friendly and enjoy working with children. I can teach your children basic vocabulary, grammer, pronunciation and everyday conversations through fun activities.

Apart from teaching, I would be happy to help your family with some household responsibilities, prepare simple indian meals and take children to parks. I could also introduce them to indian culture, traditions and festivals.

I would love to take this job because i am curious to learn about Australian culture and improving my communication skills. Additionally, living with a family would give me an opportunity to learn about a different lifestyle while sharing my own language and culture.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully, Jass.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your suitability through your language skills and experience with children, offer help with meals and outings, and give reasons for wanting the position. The letter maintains a clear, relevant purpose throughout. The suitability section is particularly supported by details such as your English degree and your proposed teaching activities. Some ideas are less fully developed: for example, “household responsibilities” is broad, and your reasons for wanting the job could be linked more directly to what you hope to contribute to the family. A little more specific explanation in these areas would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised clearly, with separate paragraphs for your qualifications, additional help, and motivation. This gives the reader a logical progression through the requested points, and phrases such as “Apart from teaching” and “Additionally” help connect ideas. The opening and closing also make the purpose and tone easy to follow. Cohesion is generally effective, although some transitions are quite formulaic, and the final paragraph repeats the idea of learning about another culture in two closely related ways. You could improve flow by combining those points or showing more explicitly how your personal goals connect to the family’s needs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “pronunciation,” “everyday conversations,” “household responsibilities,” and “traditions.” These choices communicate your skills and offers clearly. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, including “postition,” “grammer,” and “s fluent speaker.” The phrase “good command of English” is appropriate, while “curious to learn about Australian culture” is understandable but could be expressed more naturally and precisely. Greater accuracy with spelling and more idiomatic phrasing would strengthen your control of vocabulary without changing the clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “I would be interested in this opportunity, as…” and the conditional offer “I would be happy to help your family…”. Most sentences are easy to understand, and errors do not obstruct the message. Some grammatical slips remain: “as i believe” needs a capital letter, “I am s fluent speaker” has an incorrect article or typo, and “I am currently studying MBA” needs an article before “MBA.” In “I am curious to learn about Australian culture and improving my communication skills,” the verb forms are not parallel. Proofreading these details and varying sentence patterns more confidently would improve accuracy.
