Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir or Madem,
I am writing this letter to your advertisment seeking someone to teach your two childeren my native langauge for a year. I would be delighted to apply this possition.
I belive I would be suitable for this job because I am a patient, responsible and friendly person. As a netive speaker, I can help your childeren improve their speaking, listening and pronuncation skills. I would also make the leassons enjoybale by using games, stories and everyday conversations rather relay entirely on textbooks.
In addition to teaching the language I would be happy to assit your family with various household activites. For example, I could help the childeren with their homework, prepare simple meals

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You address the application and suitability points: you describe yourself as “patient, responsible and friendly” and explain that being a native speaker would help the children practise several skills. You also begin to say what you could do for the family by offering homework help and simple meals. However, the response is incomplete: it stops mid-sentence, does not give any reason for wanting the job, and does not fully develop the additional help you could provide. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the limited coverage. To strengthen the letter, complete all three points and add specific reasons, such as your interest in living in Australia or working with children.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The ideas that are present follow a sensible order: you introduce your application, explain your suitability, and then move to other possible help for the family. Paragraph breaks also make these stages easy to identify. Linking phrases such as “because” and “In addition to” help show the relationship between points, and the letter is generally understandable. However, the final paragraph ends abruptly after “prepare simple meals,” so the progression is not completed and the reader is left expecting more. The response also lacks a closing and sign-off. Complete the final idea, add a paragraph explaining your reasons for applying, and finish with an appropriate closing to make the letter feel whole.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a personal application, including “patient,” “responsible,” “native speaker,” “pronunciation skills,” and “everyday conversations.” These choices communicate your relevant qualities and teaching approach. There are, however, noticeable spelling errors, including “advertisment,” “childeren,” “langauge,” and “pronuncation,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the letter. Some phrasing is also less natural, such as “apply this position” and “rather rely entirely on textbooks.” Proofread carefully and choose more idiomatic expressions, for example, “apply for this position” and “rather than relying entirely on textbooks.” A broader set of precise phrases for your motivation and family support would also make the application more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both straightforward sentences and some more developed structures. For example, “I believe I would be suitable for this job because…” gives a clear reason, while “by using games, stories and everyday conversations” adds detail to your teaching approach. Most of the intended meaning remains clear. Some grammatical and punctuation issues are present: “I would be delighted to apply this position” needs the pattern “apply for this position,” and the final sentence is incomplete after “prepare simple meals.” There is also a missing space after the full stop in “activities.For.” Aim to complete each sentence and check prepositions and punctuation. Adding a few accurate complex sentences to explain your motivation would demonstrate greater control.
