IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries, paying for things using mobile phone (cellphone) apps is becoming increasingly common. Does this development have more advantages or more disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Nowadays, the use of digital apps on smartphones has become more common than before. In my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons regarding the above statement.
For instance, using phones to pay bills is way more convenient than carrying cash with us. Also, the risk of theft and misplacing money is somewhat eliminated. There are so many instances where people forget where they kept the money at the time of use. Due to this, they have to deal with stress and anxiety in daily life.
Moreover, digital platforms help to keep track of cash inflow and outflow. Therefore, this assists in money management, which is crucial in today's time. Not just to the common man but also to the government. As it reduces the chances of corruption to some extent. To add to this, these apps are helping us to reduce the cost involved in the making of currency notes, which is beneficial to all of us as a whole.
On the other side, too much dependence on such apps can also be harmful at times. As, cyber crime is a major concern when it comes to online banking platforms. Additionally, making sure that you are not sharing your personal information associated with apps is important to avoid such happenings.
To conclude, from my knowledge and experience, it is preferable to grow with time and adapt to new methods. Smartphones are the future, and using them to our benefit is a wise choice. If we are using these applications mindfully and are staying aware of online fraud, then I definitely think we can make a difference and help save both money and resources for the coming generations.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both advantages and disadvantages, effectively arguing that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The ideas are relevant, such as convenience, security, and financial management. However, some points could be further extended to reach a higher band. For instance, the mention of corruption is a strong point but is only briefly touched upon. To improve, ensure that each supporting idea is fully developed with more specific examples or deeper analysis to demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'On the other side' to guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. While the progression is clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always smooth and natural, rather than relying on standard linking words at the start of every paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cash inflow and outflow', 'cyber crime', and 'online banking platforms'. The meaning is clear throughout, and there are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the sophistication or 'less common' lexical items required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'financial transparency', 'digital infrastructure', or 'security vulnerabilities', to show a more flexible and precise command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the making of currency notes' (which is slightly awkward) and the sentence fragment 'As, cyber crime is a major concern'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though the use of commas could be more refined. To reach a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring that your sentence construction is consistently accurate, avoiding minor slips that can occur when attempting more complex ideas.
