Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages of mobile payment apps. However, the task asks for a balanced view or a decision on whether there are more advantages or disadvantages. The student focuses almost exclusively on advantages, which limits the depth of the argument. While the ideas regarding education and convenience are relevant, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of 'Uber' is a bit tangential to the core concept of mobile payment systems, as it focuses more on the service than the payment method itself. To reach a higher band, the student should provide a more balanced perspective or a more nuanced argument that directly addresses the 'more advantages or disadvantages' aspect of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Finall' (a spelling error) and the transition into the Uber example. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between the paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where 'echelons' is used incorrectly to refer to people. Overall, the paragraphing is sufficient, but the flow between sentences needs more variety and precision.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'contemporay era', 'mumerous', and 'echelons' (used incorrectly to mean 'people'). The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with collocations, such as 'having subscription of various apps' instead of 'subscribing to various apps'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or varied vocabulary limits the score. To improve, the student should focus on learning topic-specific collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with articles ('the education department', 'the subscription'), pluralisation ('peole', 'restaurent'), and verb forms ('by having the membership of apps encourage peole'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, and there are several spelling errors like 'contemporay', 'moblie', and 'mumerous'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and proofreading for common spelling and article errors.
