IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, paying for things using mobile phone (cellphone) apps is becoming increasingly common. Does this development have more advantages or more disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

As mobile phones are ubiquitous in the modern world, subscription payment of some mobile applications is being prevalent. I am inclined to mention, while these applications have benefits for individuals, it also has some drawbacks. Therefore, people must consider their personal benefits by allowing themselves some time to decide before paying for it.

Examining the advantages of subscribing mobile applications, most importantly, it provides individuals with a source of entertainment for which they are not required to commute to the cinema or museum as they can watch movies, listen to the music of their interest by sitting in their comfortable environment. For instance, subscribing to entertainment applications such as Netflix, Hotstar, and Chaupal save them to spend money on individual movie tickets in the cineplex and they can save time to relax, invest in their interest or spend quality time with family along with entertainment. Additionally, these applications are beneficial for learners as they can learn language or particular skills by staying in their homes. Students are not required to attend personal classes anymore as through online applications they can get training at home. For example, many international students these days are learning French, Japanese and many other languages by sitting in a single corner of the world without even spending on air travel.

On the contrary, there are some demerits of paying for these applications as people depend much on online resources when they find it more convenient. It reduces personal relationship with teachers, classmates and society when they just stay in their rooms for a long period of time. They alleviate their cognitive skills when they find everything readily available with these resources and do not make efforts to use their personal opinions or knowledge. They discover some heath problems such as obesity, diabetes, anxiety at an early stage of their life. In addition to this, many applications which are not useful for people are being paid and later many of these are not used when individuals discover those irrelevant. It costs them money even when they do not use it later so it just tighten their budget for necessities.

To conclude, although many applications are useful for people to entertain and educate, individuals must properly check their usefulness and drawbacks before paying for any mobile applications as in future it may stress them when they are required to pay again.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing both advantages and disadvantages of mobile payment apps. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are generally well-developed. For instance, the discussion on entertainment and education provides specific examples like Netflix and language learning. However, the argument could be strengthened by more nuanced analysis; for example, the claim that apps 'alleviate their cognitive skills' is slightly unclear in its phrasing and could be better supported. Overall, the response is balanced and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the benefits of entertainment or the drawbacks of social isolation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally,' 'On the contrary,' and 'In addition to this,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the third paragraph (e.g., 'they' referring to students or users) could be more precise to avoid ambiguity. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'ubiquitous,' 'commute,' and 'cineplex.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'subscription payment of some mobile applications is being prevalent' (should be 'becoming prevalent') and 'alleviate their cognitive skills' (where 'hinder' or 'impair' would be more accurate). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary is sufficient to express complex ideas regarding the impact of technology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are frequent error-free sentences, there are persistent grammatical slips, such as 'subscribing mobile applications' (should be 'to mobile applications') and 'many applications... are being paid' (should be 'require payment'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are areas that need attention. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the overall control of grammar is sufficient to convey your arguments clearly throughout the essay.
