IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries, paying for things using mobile phone (cellphone) apps is becoming increasingly common. Does this development have more advantages or more disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
In many countries, mobile payment apps are becoming an increasingly popular way of paying for goods and services. Although this development has some disadvantages, I believe that the advantages are greater overall.
One major advantage of mobile payments is convenience. People can pay for items without carrying cash or a physical bank card, which is particularly useful when they are travelling or in a hurry. Mobile payment apps also make it possible to transfer money and pay bills within seconds, saving people the time they would otherwise spend visiting a bank or an ATM. For example, many people now use their phones to pay for transportation, groceries and online purchases without needing to withdraw cash.
Another benefit is that mobile payments can make financial transactions easier to track. Most applications provide users with a record of their payments, allowing them to monitor their spending more effectively. This can help people manage their finances and identify unnecessary expenses. In addition, businesses can benefit from faster transactions and reduced reliance on handling physical cash.
However, there are some significant disadvantages. The most serious concern is security. If someone’s phone or account is stolen or compromised, criminals may gain access to their money. There is also the risk of fraud through fake payment links, phishing messages or fraudulent applications. Furthermore, people who are not comfortable using technology, particularly some elderly individuals, may find it difficult to adapt to a system that increasingly depends on mobile devices.
Despite these concerns, I believe that the benefits of mobile payment apps outweigh their disadvantages. As long as users take appropriate security measures, such as using strong passwords and avoiding suspicious links, mobile payments can provide a fast, convenient and effective way of managing everyday transactions.
In conclusion, although mobile payment apps present certain security and accessibility challenges, their convenience, speed and ability to help people manage their finances make them a positive development overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments for both the advantages (convenience, financial tracking) and disadvantages (security, accessibility) are relevant and well-developed. Each paragraph provides sufficient supporting details, such as the mention of 'phishing messages' and 'elderly individuals', which adds depth to your analysis. The conclusion effectively synthesises your main points, confirming your stance that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The essay is well-balanced and directly answers the question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One major advantage', 'Another benefit', 'However', and 'In addition'. These markers help the reader follow your argument without difficulty. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. You use topic-specific terms such as 'financial transactions', 'compromised', 'phishing messages', and 'accessibility challenges' accurately. The language is natural and precise, allowing for clear communication of your ideas. While the vocabulary is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical range is more than adequate to convey your arguments with precision and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a high level of grammatical control. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If someone’s phone... is stolen') and concessive clauses ('Although this development has...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is accurate throughout. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede meaning. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a strong command of English grammar suitable for this level.
