IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries, paying for things using mobile phone (cellphone) apps is becoming increasingly common. Does this development have more advantages or more disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
In recent years, paying for goods and services through mobile phone applications has become increasingly widespread in many countries. Although this development raises some concerns, particularly regarding security and excessive reliance on technology, I believe that its advantages are considerably greater because mobile payments are convenient, efficient and increasingly accessible.
One of the most significant advantages of mobile payments is the convenience they offer in everyday transactions. Consumers can make purchases within seconds without carrying cash or physical bank cards, which is particularly useful when people are travelling or making small purchases. Moreover, mobile applications often provide digital records of transactions, allowing users to monitor their spending more easily. For example, a person can purchase groceries, pay a restaurant bill or transfer money to a friend simply by using a smartphone. Consequently, mobile payment systems can save time and make routine financial transactions considerably more efficient.
Nevertheless, the increasing dependence on mobile payment applications is not without drawbacks. The most significant concern is the potential for financial and personal information to be compromised through cyberattacks, fraudulent applications or careless use of smartphones. In addition, people may face difficulties if their phone is lost, stolen or has no battery or internet connection. For instance, someone who relies exclusively on a mobile wallet may be unable to pay for essential goods if their device suddenly stops functioning. These risks demonstrate that consumers still need to maintain appropriate security measures and, where possible, alternative methods of payment.
Overall, although mobile payments can expose users to security risks and technological problems, I believe their advantages outweigh their disadvantages. Their ability to make transactions faster, more convenient and easier to manage makes them a valuable development, provided that users take sensible precautions to protect their financial information.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments for both the advantages (convenience, efficiency) and disadvantages (security risks, technical failure) are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of digital transaction records and the scenario of a device running out of battery. The conclusion effectively summarises your stance. The ideas are logically extended, and the response is balanced, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the advantages and disadvantages is smooth, using appropriate linking words like 'Nevertheless' and 'Moreover'. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect sentences and ideas without being repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. The structure is coherent and professional throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic. Phrases such as 'increasingly widespread', 'everyday transactions', and 'potential for financial and personal information to be compromised' show a good command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and natural, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and clarity, and there are no errors in word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although this development raises some concerns...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy, which is consistent with the requirements for a high band score. The use of modal verbs and conditional structures is also handled correctly.
