IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, paying for things using mobile phone (cellphone) apps is becoming increasingly common. Does this development have more advantages or more disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In many countries, paying for goods and services through mobile phone applications has become increasingly popular. Although this development has some disadvantages, particularly concerning security and privacy, I believe that the advantages are considerably greater.

One significant advantage of mobile payments is convenience. People can pay for almost anything without carrying cash or physical bank cards. This is particularly useful when travelling or when making small purchases. For example, customers can simply use an application on their phones to pay for groceries, public transport or a meal at a restaurant. Mobile payments can also save time because transactions are usually completed within a few seconds. As a result, businesses can serve customers more efficiently, especially during busy periods.

Another important benefit is that mobile payment systems can help people manage their finances. Most applications provide a record of transactions, allowing users to monitor their spending more easily than when they use cash. In addition, digital payments can be useful for online shopping and transferring money to family members or friends. They also reduce people's dependence on cash, which can be lost or stolen.

However, there are some disadvantages associated with this development. The most serious concern is security. If a person's phone or payment account is compromised, criminals may potentially gain access to financial information or make unauthorised transactions. There are also privacy concerns because digital payments create records of people's purchases. Furthermore, people may face difficulties if their phone battery dies, their internet connection is unavailable, or a payment application experiences a technical problem.

Despite these drawbacks, I believe mobile payments have more advantages than disadvantages. Security measures such as passwords, biometric authentication and transaction notifications can significantly reduce the risk of fraud. In my view, as long as users take reasonable precautions and payment providers maintain strong security systems, the convenience and financial benefits of mobile payments outweigh the potential risks.

In conclusion, mobile phone payments offer greater convenience, faster transactions and better financial tracking, although they also create security and privacy concerns. Overall, I consider this development to be positive because its benefits are more substantial than its disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both the advantages (convenience, financial management) and the disadvantages (security, technical failures). The conclusion effectively synthesises your main points. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion on the 'disadvantages' section to match the depth of the 'advantages' section, perhaps by discussing the societal impact of the digital divide, but overall, the task response is comprehensive and well-supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Although', 'For example', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore'. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the argument. The flow of the essay is natural, and the reader is guided through your reasoning without any confusion. The structure is highly effective and supports the overall clarity of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, such as 'unauthorised transactions', 'biometric authentication', and 'financial tracking'. The word choice is generally precise and natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, it stays within a relatively standard range. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations (e.g., 'mitigate risks' instead of 'reduce the risk', or 'ubiquity of mobile payments' instead of 'increasingly popular'). However, there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional sentences ('as long as users take...') and concessive clauses ('Although this development has...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You use a mix of simple and complex forms effectively to convey your ideas. There are no major grammatical errors that hinder understanding. To move to a higher band, ensure you continue to experiment with a wider range of advanced structures, such as inversion or more varied passive constructions, though your current control is already very strong.
