Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Simran,

I am writing this letter to you because yesterday I came to know about your decision of going on camping holiday in this summer vacations.I would say you will definitely enjoy this camping holiday, as you are going to arrange this camping in an open area and in a hilly area, where the nature is very good. I know you are a nature-loving person who likes to spend time with birds and plants.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of camping in these areas, especially on summer days, because there will be mosquitoes and insects that may bite someone, and you may face health issues. I am very happy for your camping, but I am sorry I will not go with you because I have an important exam after the summer vacation, so I have to prepare for that in my vacation.

Your's Faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that Simran may enjoy the natural setting, mention mosquitoes and insects as disadvantages, and clearly say you cannot join because of an exam. The reason for enjoyment is relevant, especially the detail that Simran likes spending time with birds and plants. However, the disadvantages and your decision are only briefly explained, so these parts are less developed than the first point. The response is also one word below the required minimum. To strengthen the letter, add a practical detail about the drawbacks, such as discomfort from heat or limited facilities, and perhaps suggest another time to go together.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the camping plan, explain its appeal, turn to possible drawbacks, and finish with your availability. The paragraph break helps distinguish the positive reasons from the disadvantages and your response. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “because” make the relationships between ideas clear, and the reader can follow your message without difficulty. To show more flexible organisation, develop the ideas in a slightly fuller progression rather than placing several points in long sentences. A separate closing paragraph or a friendly final sentence would also make the ending feel more complete and give the letter a more natural flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and communicates the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “camping,” “nature-loving,” “mosquitoes,” and “insects.” You also use some descriptive language to explain why the holiday might appeal to Simran. However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “decision of going on camping holiday,” “in this summer vacations,” and “your camping.” These choices make the letter sound less natural, although the intended meaning remains clear. Aim for more accurate collocations and a wider range of practical camping vocabulary, such as equipment, facilities, or outdoor activities. Check possessive forms and conventional expressions when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a nature-loving person who likes to spend time with birds and plants” and a reason clause explaining why you cannot go. The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “you will definitely enjoy” would be more natural as “you would definitely enjoy” in this advice, and “there will be mosquitoes and insects that may bite someone” shifts awkwardly from addressing your friend to a general person. The opening sentence also runs into the next sentence without a space after “vacations.” Review articles, prepositions, tense choices, and sentence punctuation, while keeping the useful variety of structures you already attempt.
