Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Steve,

Hope you are well. I just got your email about your planning to go for camping for 2 days in alberta. To be honest, it is a very good idea to have a break from routine life. I must say that you should go for this trip.

Camping in hilly area is going to have a huge impact on your mind and body. I know that you usually remain very busy because of your tight work schedule but trust me, this trip will give you a peace in mind. Fresh air and shiny view of mountains make you feel more alive and happy.

However, if you are going to stay one night, there are some suggestions I want to give to you. First, make sure you light up the campfire all night to keep animals away at night. Secondly, make sure you have proper equipment like tent, sleeping bags, clothing, wood to light up fire etc.

If I talk about myself to join you in this trip, I must say sorry in advance. As you know, I already took all my vacations from work last month during my trip to denmark, Thus, I am not able to join you this time, but, next time, I'll be the first one to plan the next trip. I promise

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant advice regarding potential disadvantages (safety and equipment), and clearly stated that you cannot join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'disadvantages' bullet point; while you mentioned safety and equipment, these are technically 'requirements' rather than inherent disadvantages of camping (like lack of facilities or unpredictable weather). Developing these ideas further would help you reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To be honest', 'However', 'First', and 'Secondly' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure that referencing is precise. For example, in the final paragraph, the transition between declining the invitation and promising a future trip could be smoother by using a more sophisticated connector like 'Having said that' or 'Regrettably'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'tight work schedule' and 'routine life' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'shiny view of mountains' (which sounds unnatural; 'breathtaking' or 'scenic' would be better) and 'peace in mind' (the correct idiom is 'peace of mind'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions would elevate your score. Focus on learning common collocations related to travel and nature to sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'your planning to go' (should be 'you are planning'), 'camping in hilly area' (should be 'a hilly area'), and 'I already took all my vacations' (should be 'I have already taken'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Additionally, try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
