Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ngozi, how are you doing, hope everything is going as planed. In response to your letter, I am very happy that you are going for a summer holiday and i most tell you that it is a wonderful and fun filled experience, it worth the money incase you are thinking maybe you have spent much because the fun, entertainment wnd relaxation you will experience will over whelm you. the fun starts immediately you most have payed for your reservations and gained entrance to the location, one of the first interesting things you will see is the beautiful buildings, water falls, different animals in it's natural habitat and a calm environment with classical music at the background and i know you love such environment, but mind you that you will encounter some challenges if you don't have cash because often times ,things you might be needing while in camp will demand for fiscal cash, so you need some cash in your wallet to enjoy every bit of your stay.

I will want to advice you on some of the challenges i faced while in camp, on my first day, after the days activities and i needed to take a break and sleep, i notice a lot of mosquito bit and many insects crawling around which made me a some how uncomfortable but i had to buy a mosquito net to avoid mosquitos and insects but outside that you are go to go.

I would have love to go with you on this camp but owing to my office promotion courses which started last week, i will have to read and be able to write the promotion exams but i assure you that you will enjoy your holiday camp.

thanks yours

Agubo Stanley A.

sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why the friend would enjoy camping, describe potential disadvantages like the need for cash and insects, and clearly state that you cannot join them due to your upcoming promotion exams. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the first paragraph where the focus on 'fun' is mentioned multiple times without adding new information. To improve, ensure each bullet point is developed with distinct, clear points rather than circular explanations. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on one of the bullet points. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by long, run-on sentences. For example, the first paragraph is essentially one very long sentence that lacks clear internal punctuation, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While you use some cohesive devices like 'but' and 'however', the connection between sentences could be smoother. Using more varied transition words and breaking up overly long sentences would significantly improve the readability and logical flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, using terms like 'natural habitat', 'reservations', and 'uncomfortable'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'fiscal cash' (which is redundant), 'over whelm you' (should be one word), and 'you are go to go' (should be 'good to go'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise collocation and spelling accuracy. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural idiomatic expressions would help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it worth the money'), tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'you most have payed'), and punctuation errors, particularly the lack of full stops to separate independent clauses. The frequent run-on sentences suggest a need to focus on sentence boundaries. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the text from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic tense and punctuation errors will be very beneficial.
