Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Jon,

I hope you are doing well! I am thrilled to know that you are going for your first-ever camping trip this summer.

You will enjoy the camping experience because it will allow you to disconnect from the urban environment which is full of pollution and stress. The trip will reduce your cortisol level has been high due to the work stress. Moreover, the retreat will help you to reconnect with nature and experience the bliss of the environment such as lying in the grass, stargazing and hiking.

On the other hand, please remember to carry proper camping and safety gear because you can encounter wildlife. Also, remember to bring bug and mosquito repellent to prevent yourself from insect bites at night. Lastly, always carry a flashlight and some sort of weapon to safeguard yourself from any danger.

Since this is your first camping and I am free during the summer, I would like to go with you. Let me know who else is going with you and what your itinerary is. I hope to see you soon and make plans.

Your friend,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter effectively addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the benefits of camping, such as disconnecting from urban stress and reconnecting with nature. You also provide relevant disadvantages, specifically mentioning wildlife and the need for safety gear. Finally, you clearly state your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. The response is fully focused on the requirements, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different aspects of the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Lastly' are used to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear. The letter maintains a consistent tone throughout, and the referencing is accurate, making the text easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a semi-formal or informal letter. Phrases like 'disconnect from the urban environment', 'stargazing', and 'itinerary' are used effectively. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more idiomatic expressions or slightly more sophisticated collocations could elevate the score further. Overall, the lexical range is adequate for the task and conveys your message clearly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures correctly. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There is a minor error in the sentence 'The trip will reduce your cortisol level has been high', where a relative pronoun or a different structure was needed (e.g., 'which has been high'). However, this does not impede understanding. Punctuation is used correctly, and the overall control of grammatical structures is strong, showing a good level of proficiency.
