Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear harpreet,

i hope you doing well. i got your letter where you mentioned you are planning to go for camping. Believe me, i am so happy for you. camping is a great life time experience. you are going to love it. I really want you to enjoy this trip because now you have free time, you are now working and there is no work pressure on you. so take this time to heal and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Also, i want to mention, probably you will see hard time during night, because in forest you will hear strange animal voices which are so scary and disturbing. moreover, you will find some insects around your camps so make sure to take some medicines with you.

I am sorry babes, i really want to join you in this camping holiday, but unfortunately i am going to visit my aunt as she is not well. i need to stay there to help her. i hope you will understand this.

enjoy your trip and i will see you soon!

Warm regards

chanpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, describe potential disadvantages such as scary noises and insects, and clearly state that you cannot join the trip due to family commitments. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for example, by mentioning specific activities like hiking or stargazing—to ensure the ideas are fully developed rather than just mentioned. Overall, the task is completed successfully.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices like 'also', 'moreover', and 'unfortunately' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. At times, the transition between ideas feels a bit abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing (e.g., 'this time', 'this camping holiday') is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a range of vocabulary that is sufficient for the task, such as 'work pressure', 'disturbing', and 'commitments'. However, there are some informal choices and minor inaccuracies, such as 'hard time' (which usually means a difficult experience rather than a difficult period) and 'babes' (which is very informal). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding overly casual slang. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives related to nature or travel would also enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are several grammatical errors, particularly regarding capitalization (e.g., 'i', 'harpreet') and verb tense consistency (e.g., 'i hope you doing well' instead of 'I hope you are doing well'). You rely mostly on simple sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, the lack of complex sentence structures and the frequency of basic punctuation and capitalization errors limit your score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure you use capital letters for proper nouns and the start of sentences.
