Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sama,

I hope you are doing amazing. I heard you are planning to go camping. Since it is your first time, I am writing this letter to give you some advice.

Firstly, I would say going on this holiday is the best decision you have ever made. I firmly believe you will enjoy yourself a lot. You will be hiking the mountains and viewing beautiful scenes. This is going to be an exceptional experience for you. You will learn the true meaning of friendship and independence on this trip as you have to do diverse things on your own. So, during these camping holidays, enjoy everything you do.

Secondly, I think you should know the possible hurdles of camping. You have to sleep in a camp, which might feel uncomfortable for you. Additionally, you have to walk a lot, and I know you are not habituated to continuous walking. I am telling you all those possibilities so that you can prepare yourself for these difficulties.

Lastly, I am also planning to go camping with my college mates this summer. We are planning to go abroad for this, and it will be 10 days travelling. I am excited for this summer.

I hope you like your first camping, and it will become your memorizing experience. Let me know if you need any help.

Your Friend,

Tania

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified potential disadvantages, and addressed the invitation. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being informal and supportive. However, the third bullet point is slightly under-developed; while you mention your own plans, you do not explicitly state whether you would like to join your friend specifically. To reach a higher band, ensure that every part of the prompt is addressed with equal depth and clarity. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. While these are effective, they are somewhat mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of cohesive devices or linking ideas more fluidly within paragraphs rather than relying solely on list-like transitions. The progression of ideas is clear, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. Referencing is generally accurate, and the structure of the letter follows standard conventions for a personal correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'firmly believe', 'exceptional experience', and 'possible hurdles' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'habituated to' (which is slightly formal/unnatural in this context) and 'memorizing experience' (which should be 'memorable'). While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural idiomatic expressions would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I hope you like your first camping' (should be 'camping trip') and '10 days travelling' (should be 'a 10-day trip'). These errors are infrequent and do not cause any confusion for the reader. You show good control over punctuation and sentence construction, which allows for a smooth reading experience. Continuing to practice complex sentence forms will further improve your accuracy.
