Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mark,

I hope you are doing well. I am happy to know that you are planning to go for a camping holiday this summer. I believe this would be a best holiday experience for you as you are fond of nature and adventurous activities, this trip would definitely help you to explore beautiful scenic places.

However, there could be some drawbacks too, which I think would be challenging for you. In addition, there would be lack of facilities due to the nature area, so always keep yourself hydrated by drinking water.

I would also like to accompany you in your trip as this would help us to spent time to

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and expressing interest in joining. However, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence ('...spent time to'). Furthermore, the response is under the 150-word minimum requirement, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, the lack of a conclusion and the failure to meet the length requirement prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure all points are fully developed and that the letter reaches the required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter uses basic paragraphing and some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, the progression is interrupted by the abrupt ending of the text. The logical flow is clear in the first two paragraphs, but the lack of a final paragraph or a closing salutation makes the overall structure incomplete. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that the letter concludes naturally with a sign-off, which is standard for this task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using phrases like 'fond of nature' and 'adventurous activities'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'best holiday experience' (should be 'the best') and 'nature area' (which is slightly unnatural; 'remote area' or 'wilderness' would be better). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives and collocations related to travel and camping would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'You might found' (should be 'find') and 'spent time to' (the sentence is incomplete). Additionally, there is a comma splice in the first paragraph ('...adventurous activities, this trip...'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors and the incomplete final sentence indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a stronger grasp of verb forms and sentence punctuation.
