Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mark,

I hope you are doing well. I am happy to know that you are planning to go for a camping holiday this summer. I believe this would be a best holiday experience for you as you are fond of nature and adventurous activities, this trip would definitely help you to explore beautiful scenic places.

However, there could be some drawbacks too, which I think would be challenging for you. You might found trekking difficult as this is going to be your first experience of camping where you would be climbing mountains. In addition, there would be lack of facilities due to the nature area, so always keep yourself hydrated by drinking water.

I would also like to accompany you in your trip as this would help us to spent some time together after a long time, creating unforgettable memories. I hope you would find my suggestions useful and excited to join you in your first camping experience. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours lovely,

Sakshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified potential disadvantages such as the physical challenge of trekking and the lack of facilities, and confirmed your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To improve, you could provide slightly more specific examples of the 'scenic places' or the 'lack of facilities' to further develop your ideas, which would help you move into the higher band range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'However', 'In addition', and 'I would also like to' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To achieve a higher score, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural. Currently, some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and using more varied linking phrases would improve the overall flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'fond of nature', 'adventurous activities', and 'unforgettable memories' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'Yours lovely' (which should be 'Yours lovingly' or 'Best wishes') and 'nature area' (which is slightly unnatural; 'remote area' or 'natural setting' would be better). You have enough vocabulary to communicate effectively, but incorporating more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions would enhance your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'this would be a best holiday' should be 'the best holiday', and 'You might found' should be 'You might find'. Additionally, 'spent some time' should be 'spend some time'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of verb tenses and article usage. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
