Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Cheryl,
How are you doing? considering the excitement on the letter you sent to me talking about the plans you have this holiday, which is to go on a camping holiday, I would say you are fine.
If am to give my honest opinion about camping holidays, I would rate it an 85 percent fun experience. Camping holidays gives room to wide range of activities, especially socializing with other campers and building your level of adaptation and understanding.
However, there are several reason why camping holidays might be considered discouraging. Firstly, there is no high level of comfort, many camp sites allow tents instead of bed which our body is already used to, which might cause a bit of discomfort at the initial stage, which is where the adaptation comes in. Secondly, depending on the camp you will be choosing, if not properly fumigated you might experience mosquito bites and inserts disturbing the area due to the fact it's always an open space.
I would really love to join you on this holiday camping, since I have had couple of experience on camping. However, the date you picked for the event happens to clash with the date of my sister's marriage and since is a family event and my present will be needed, I wont be joining.
I will be a call away should incase you need any help. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Emela.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain why camping is enjoyable, outline potential disadvantages such as lack of comfort and insects, and provide a clear reason for being unable to join your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening is more concise and natural, as the current introduction is slightly wordy and contains some awkward phrasing regarding the letter you received.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly' to link your points. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward sentence structures, such as in the opening paragraph. Improving the transition between sentences would enhance the overall readability. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the letter follows a standard structure for informal correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'socializing', 'adaptation', and 'fumigated' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'inserts' instead of 'insects' and 'couple of experience' instead of 'a couple of experiences'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that pluralization and word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Camping holidays gives room') and awkward phrasing ('should incase'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences that could be improved by using full stops or semicolons. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will significantly improve your writing.
