Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Peter,

Going on a camping will give you the incredible experience such as you could enjoy the beauty of nature in the summer season especially in Canada, where 8 months remain snow and you would hardly go outside.

Although you can have fun over there but these camping places always risky. If you decided to go for camping make sure you would carry all the essential things with you such as a tent, some durable food, flexible and comfortable cloths and shoes for hikeing and lots of walk, a lamp for night and many more things ,otherwise you will suffer from unpredictable weather condition and unavailability of sources at these places.

I wish I could come with you ,unfortunatlly this seasons I have to join the summer camp of my daughter which is organized out of the town. But I hope you will have the best time.

Your loving

jai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, mention potential disadvantages like risks and the need for preparation, and clarify your inability to join. The ideas are relevant and the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy camping is limited to the beauty of nature. Expanding on the specific activities or the relaxing nature of camping would have provided a more fully developed response. Overall, the task requirements are met, but the depth of content is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'If', and 'But' to link sentences and clauses. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and some mechanical transitions. For example, the transition between the benefits and the disadvantages is a bit abrupt. To improve, try using a wider range of linking words and ensure that your sentences flow more naturally into one another. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, which contributes to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'incredible', 'unpredictable', and 'unavailability'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'Going on a camping' (should be 'Going camping'), 'durable food' (should be 'non-perishable food'), and 'flexible and comfortable cloths' (should be 'clothes'). Additionally, there are spelling errors like 'hikeing' and 'unfortunatlly'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they do limit the precision and sophistication of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence 'If you decided to go...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with articles ('the beauty of nature' is correct, but 'the summer season' is slightly awkward), verb tense consistency ('If you decided' should be 'If you decide'), and pluralization ('cloths' instead of 'clothes'). Some sentences are also slightly fragmented or run-on, which affects the overall accuracy. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates that you need to focus on basic grammatical rules and proofreading to ensure more error-free sentences.
