Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Lucy,
I hope you are doing good, it is so great to hear that you are planning on a camping holiday this summer. I would be glad to help you with your first camping outing.
First things first, camping is a great idea for this summer as it makes us to stay close to nature instead of sitting at home infront of digital gadgets. I feel you would enjoy this summer after the long semester at college. Camping helps us to connect with our thoughts and refresh our mind. I know you love to spend time with friends at a peaceful place, camping at beverly hills is the great option. I also suggest visiting wine yard nearby which would be great to have fun at the wine preparation.
As this is your first time, there are few things to keep in your mind. You would not find a hotel or camping rooms at beverly hills, so you would need to carry your own sleeping bag with a tent and few camping accessories which helps to light some fire to keep yourself warm and away from wild animals. It is also hard to find a toilet at the camping site, so you better carry a portable toilet unit, which would be a great help. Also, do carry your own food and water supplies. You would find these items easily at the sports section in Walmart store near to your home.
I would also love to go on camping with my friend this summer. However, I had to stay at home to take care of my niece and nephew this summer as my sister family is visiting us. Well, anyways you have a great fun and a safe camping trip. I would love to hear about your adventures once you are back from your camping holiday.
Lots of love,
Manu.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain why camping is enjoyable, provide practical (if slightly unusual) disadvantages, and address the invitation to join. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being informal and supportive. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the advice regarding equipment. To reach a higher band, ensure the advice given is more realistic; for instance, suggesting a 'portable toilet unit' for a camping trip is quite unconventional and might be seen as slightly confusing. However, the task is fully addressed with a clear, consistent tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First things first', 'As this is your first time', and 'However', which help the flow of ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, but the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow and the message is clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'connect with our thoughts' and 'refresh our mind' are natural. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'wine yard' (vineyard) and 'at beverly hills' (in Beverly Hills). While you attempt to use some descriptive language, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure correct spelling of common terms to avoid minor distractions for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it makes us to stay' (it makes us stay), 'infront' (in front), and 'my sister family' (my sister's family). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some minor slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of possessives, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
