Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jason,
I hope you are doing well.
I am writing this letter to express my views and concerns regarding the camping trip you have been planning for this summer. In my opinion, it will be a great and different adventure for you to experience. Owing to camping is something that test your survival and patience.
However, there are a few things that you would have to be careful about. Firstly, make sure you pack ready to eat snacks with you because there would not be any food places near the camping sites. Secondly, carry at least three bottles of anti-repellent spray. This is because there will be a number of mosquitoes over there at night.
Nevertheless, I would have loved to join you during this trip. But I have already promised my family that I would spend quality time with them for this year' s holidays.
I would love to hear back from you, once you are back from your trip. Then we can plan accordingly to see each other.
Yours faithfully,
Kiranjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant disadvantages (food and mosquitoes), and clearly stated that you cannot join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, explaining why camping tests 'survival and patience' could be expanded to make the advice more personal and engaging. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully extended rather than just mentioned. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. The flow of ideas is generally smooth, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always clear. The structure is sufficient to follow your argument without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'quality time' and 'plan accordingly' are natural and appropriate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'Owing to camping is something that test...' which is grammatically and lexically awkward. Additionally, 'anti-repellent spray' is not the standard term; 'insect repellent' would be more precise. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions would help elevate your score. The errors present do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are persistent grammatical errors. For example, 'Owing to camping is something that test your survival' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('test' should be 'tests') and an incorrect introductory phrase. Another error is 'for this year' s holidays', where the space before the apostrophe is incorrect. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor punctuation slips. Your control of grammar is generally good enough to ensure the message is understood.
