Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you’re doing well. I got your letter that you are thinking of going on your first ever camping trip and you need some recommendations and advice.
First of all, that is so exciting and I would more than happy to help you out. I reside in Cranbrook which is a small and growing city surrounded by beautiful Rockies mountains with breathtaking views and amazing campgrounds. Moreover, they all are next to the lakes with no extra charges on parking your trailer or putting your tent especially the one at Moyie lake. You can easily enjoy swimming, sunbathing near the lake, barbecuing, fishing and relaxing.
Also, there is one drawback which is going to be the mosquitos and wasps, so I would suggest to carry insect repellent sprays and creams with you.
At last, if you want I would love to join you on your first camping holiday. I had some days off from work next week and it is helpful to have someone along with you who knows better. Let me know what you think. I am eagerly waiting for your reply on this.
Cheers,
Roy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain why camping is enjoyable by highlighting the natural beauty of the Rockies and the recreational activities available. You also identify a relevant disadvantage (insects) and provide a practical solution. Finally, you clearly state your willingness to join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for example, by describing the specific feeling of peace or connection with nature that camping provides, which would add more depth to your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a concluding offer. You use transition words such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'At last' to guide the reader through your points. While the structure is sound, some of the cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the way you link your sentences; for instance, instead of starting every paragraph with a transition word, you could use more complex sentence structures to connect ideas within the paragraphs. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a friendly letter, using terms like 'breathtaking views', 'campgrounds', and 'insect repellent'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'I would more than happy' (missing 'be') and 'I had some days off' (should be 'I have'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring grammatical accuracy within your word choices will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I got your letter that you are thinking' is slightly awkward; 'I heard that you are thinking' would be more natural. Additionally, 'the Rockies mountains' is redundant (it should be 'the Rocky Mountains' or 'the Rockies'). There are also minor errors with prepositions and verb forms, such as 'suggest to carry' (should be 'suggest carrying'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication.
