Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mike,

I got to know that you're planning to go on a camping holiday this summer, honestly I was so thrilled upon hearing this news. It is quite essential for you to curate a lifetime experience of camping, it's got so many activities involved such as trekking, placing the tent, preparing your food, and most of all important understanding the nature.

Though life at camping isn't that easy as it looks, plenty of hardships are there which needs to be tackled for example, mosquitoes bites, danger from unknown creatures, hygiene maintenance and so on. These are some possible disadvantages of many which you would face during your camping.

As I am very keen on planning to go the camping this summer, but unfortunately an unexpected situation arose at the university and I need to get that issue sorted at the earliest, due to which I won't be able to go with my friends.

Warm wishes,

David Bosewell

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explain why camping is enjoyable, list potential disadvantages, and clarify your inability to join the trip. The ideas are relevant and the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of these points is somewhat brief. For instance, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy camping is quite general. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, personal reasons or elaborate further on the 'hardships' mentioned. Overall, the task is fulfilled clearly and the purpose of the letter is evident throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Though', 'for example', and 'due to which', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the benefits of camping and the disadvantages could be more sophisticated. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'curate a lifetime experience' and 'tackled' show an attempt to use more precise language. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'placing the tent' (pitching a tent is more natural) and 'danger from unknown creatures' (which sounds slightly unnatural). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. Expanding your range of collocations would improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'I got to know that you're planning' is informal and slightly awkward; 'it's got so many activities involved' is grammatically weak; and 'mosquitoes bites' should be 'mosquito bites'. Additionally, there is a minor error in 'planning to go the camping', where the article 'the' is unnecessary. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a reasonable attempt at using complex sentence forms.
