IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A friend of yours is thinking of going on a camping holiday for the first time this summer. He/She has asked for your advice. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Jack,

I hope you find this letter in the pink of your health. I am glad that you are finally going for camping holiday.

First and foremost, Elora is the best place to go for camping as it has beginner friendly tracks for hiking and tubing, dazzling sunrise view along with very beautiful cafes.

However, Elora is very popular in our state so it will be over crowded as you are going on Labor day weekend. Furthermore, it will be hard to find parking spots as I can see online it is fully booked two months in advance.

Additionally, I will not be able to come with you as I just got a new job with higher position and responsibilities. I would love to come but in my new company I don't have enough Casual leaves as I just started working this month. I hope you will understand my situation.

I wish you all the luck and love for you first camping trip.

Yours Faithfully,

Malhar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified specific disadvantages (crowds and parking), and clearly stated your inability to join. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear response to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' in the first point, perhaps by mentioning the benefits of being in nature or the relaxing atmosphere, to add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point from the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'However', and 'Additionally' to link your thoughts. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid. Overall, the structure is clear and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'dazzling', 'responsibilities', and 'beginner friendly'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'in the pink of your health', which is an idiom that sounds slightly unnatural in this context, and 'going for camping holiday', which should be 'going on a camping holiday'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions that fit the informal tone of a letter to a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I hope you find this letter in the pink of your health' (which is slightly awkward) and 'for you first camping trip' (should be 'your'). Additionally, 'Casual leaves' is not standard English; 'leave' is an uncountable noun in this context. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder understanding. To aim for a higher band, focus on proofreading for small articles and preposition errors, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures.
