Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Tom,
I am writing to advise you about your plan to go on a camping holiday this summer. I vividly remember that you always wanted to experience an outdoor stay especially in the mountains. Also, your excitement shows that it is like a dream come true.
Unfortunately, Camping areas often have insects and mosquitoes. Therefore, I would appreciate it if you could carry insect repellent, a first-aid kit and some ointments to tackle any challenging situation like this. In addition, Accidents can happen while camping, so bring a good pair of hiking shoes but not brand new.
I would be grateful if you could share your complete travel itinerary because I would love to accompany you on this trip. Furthermore, the biggest advantage for me is that My work schedule is flexible, so I can easily take a few days off to join you.
Thank you for your time. until then, Take care.
Yours sincerely,
Reena

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified potential disadvantages (insects and accidents), and confirmed your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention insects and accidents, expanding slightly more on the 'why' or 'how' to mitigate these issues would have provided a more comprehensive response. Overall, the letter is clear, relevant, and fulfills the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately,' 'Therefore,' 'In addition,' and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas from the initial advice to the potential risks and finally to your own participation is clear and easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally accurate, ensuring the reader can easily track the subject matter throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'itinerary,' 'insect repellent,' and 'first-aid kit.' There are a few minor issues with word choice and capitalization, such as 'outdoor stay' (which is slightly unnatural) and the unnecessary capitalization of 'My' in the third paragraph. While you do not use a wide range of sophisticated or idiomatic language, the vocabulary used is precise enough to convey your message without any confusion. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more natural collocations related to travel and outdoor activities.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I vividly remember that you always wanted' (should be 'have always wanted') and 'Accidents can happen... so bring a good pair of hiking shoes but not brand new' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some inconsistencies with capitalization and sentence fragments. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. You have sufficient control over basic grammar to ensure the reader understands your points, but more consistent accuracy in verb tenses would improve the score.
