Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. I am happy to know that you are planning to go on a camping holiday this summer. I think you will really enjoy it.

Camping is a good way to spend time in nature. You can enjoy fresh air, make a campfire, and relax away from the busy city. It is also a good chance to learn new things like putting up a tent and cooking outside. I think it will be an interesting experience for you.

However, camping also has some disadvantages. The weather can change suddenly, and it may rain. There can also be mosquitoes and other insects. Sometimes it is not easy to find clean toilets or take a shower.

I would like to go camping with you this summer if I have time. I think we will have a lot of fun together and help each other during the trip.

Write back soon.

Best wishes,

John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy camping, provide relevant disadvantages such as weather and hygiene, and confirm your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the ideas; for instance, instead of just mentioning 'weather', you could briefly describe how a sudden storm might impact the experience. Overall, the task is fully covered in a natural and friendly manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point from the instructions, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'also', and 'if' to link your sentences and paragraphs. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the benefits to the drawbacks and finally to your personal availability. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to make the flow feel less mechanical and more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a range of vocabulary that is appropriate for this informal task. Words and phrases like 'campfire', 'putting up a tent', and 'busy city' are accurate and fit the context well. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it is somewhat basic. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more descriptive or less common collocations. For example, instead of 'good way', you could use 'an excellent opportunity' or 'a refreshing escape'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you demonstrate control over simple and compound sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, which makes the letter very easy to read. You use a mix of tenses correctly, such as the present simple for general facts and the future tense for your plans. To improve, try to include more complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If I had more free time, I would definitely...') or relative clauses, to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
