Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Ray,
I am glad you have migrated to Vancouver, British Columbia. This place is full of camping sights and leasure experiences. I am writing this letter to give you some more insites on your first camping summer vacation which you mentioned in your previous letter.
As we grew young in school, I remember we used to go for summer camps in our hometown. But there were very less facilities as the camping sites were not well equiped with clean area for toilets. But do not worry, camping here are fun and you would not have to think about finding for a toilet for natures call.
But you really need to take care about the flies and apply fly-repalent sprays, otherwise it will be difficult for you to sleep in the night in a tant. Also it would be great if you could change your camping date to the upcoming Saturday insted of Friday, so I can join you along. It will be joious to re-live our old nostalgic moments after a long time.
Looking forward to join you for the summer camping.
Thanking you,
Warm regards,
Darshan Shah.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and confirming your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that camping in Vancouver is fun, you could have provided more specific details about the scenery or activities to make the advice more persuasive. Similarly, the disadvantages are limited to flies and toilets. Expanding on these points with more descriptive language would help you reach a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'but', 'also', and 'otherwise' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create smoother transitions between your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your argument. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the use of cohesive devices could be more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'migrated', 'nostalgic', and 'joyous'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'sights' instead of 'sites', 'leasure' instead of 'leisure', 'insites' instead of 'insights', 'equiped' instead of 'equipped', 'repalent' instead of 'repellent', 'tant' instead of 'tent', 'insted' instead of 'instead'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. While the meaning remains clear, improving your spelling accuracy and using more precise collocations would significantly enhance your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As we grew young in school, I remember we used to go...'. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'there were very less facilities' (should be 'fewer'), 'camping here are fun' (should be 'is'), and 'finding for a toilet' (should be 'finding a toilet'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of quantifiers like 'few' versus 'less'.
