Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I hope you're doing well. It's been a long time since we last met. I am very pleased to know that you're planning to go for a camping holiday this summer. You've asked me about some advice since it's your first time. Based on my experience, I' glad to mention few suggestions in this mail.

Camping teaches us the important lesson of life- survival techniques. When you're in wild, it is crucial to use your surroundings in your favor and camping teaches you how to put your tent, collect woodfires, lit the fire, and be safe as much as possibl. Further, it gives you a chance to enjoy the nature to the fullest. You can cherish the utmost silence, chirping of birds, and droplets of rain and these experiences are truly refreshing, I hope you will take this chance as an escape of your regular life.

However, there are a few things you should be careful about. small insects, and animals may roam around your tent. It may be an uncomfortable experience. Additionally, camping are organised with limited stocks of goods such as water and food. If we're not mindful, we may left hungry or stranded for numbers of days.

Meanwhile, I'm also planning to go to camping with my friends. Since most of us are experienced, we are going to enjoy as much as possible.

I hope my suggestion will help you to organise your trip. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Kind regards,

Adam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain the benefits of camping, such as learning survival skills and connecting with nature. You also identify relevant disadvantages, including wildlife and limited resources. Finally, you address the request regarding joining your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the disadvantages is slightly more balanced and that you fully address the 'why' behind your decision to join or not join your friend, as the current mention is quite brief.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices like 'Further', 'However', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors in sentence structure, such as the transition between the benefits and the disadvantages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. To improve, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between paragraphs feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'cherish the utmost silence' and 'survival techniques' are effective. However, there are some spelling errors ('lit' instead of 'light', 'possibl', 'woodfires') and minor word choice issues ('numbers of days' instead of 'several days'). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations to describe your experiences in nature.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('camping are organised') and article usage ('in wild'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the comma splice in '...truly refreshing, I hope you will take...'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that you are using commas correctly to join independent clauses, perhaps by using conjunctions or semicolons instead.
