Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Smith,

I am writing this email to discuss some vital information about a camping holiday.

Firstly, I think you will enjoy it too much while camping because last summer I had an experience with my family, and that was awesome. In addition, we did many activities there, also we enjoy night sky, and that was fabulous, so I think you can also feel calm and peaceful there.

Nevertheless, there are also some negative effects of staying there; sometimes the weather changes very frequently, and you will not be able to go anywhere, and you will not even be able to do a barbecue or any activities outside. Maybe it can make the experience worse.

Finally, I would like to request that, if possible, we go together, because I did not go anywhere this summer. If we are together, then we can also enjoy ourselves a lot, and I could get good holiday with you.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Jhon.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing potential disadvantages, and expressing your interest in joining them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when mentioning the weather as a disadvantage, you could have provided more specific examples of how it impacts the experience, such as the difficulty of sleeping in a tent during heavy rain. Expanding on these points with more detail would help you reach a higher band score by providing a more fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Nevertheless', and 'Finally' to signal the progression of your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between ideas feels more natural. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'and' or 'also', you could use more sophisticated connectors or relative clauses to join ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. You use some descriptive language like 'calm and peaceful' and 'fabulous'. However, there is a reliance on basic vocabulary, and some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'enjoy it too much' or 'get good holiday'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for informal correspondence. Expanding your range to include more varied adjectives and verbs will help you convey your thoughts with greater precision and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I had an experience with my family' (should be 'I had an experience camping with my family') and 'I could get good holiday' (missing article 'a'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'we did many activities there, also we enjoy night sky'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence punctuation will help you achieve a higher score. Try to proofread your work to catch these minor slips.
