Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Amit,

I am writing in response to your letter asking for advice on camping. I want to tell you that you are going to have an amazing experience, my friend. You are going to make your tent by yourself, and you will need to cook outside, and you will also enjoy the campfire. I really suggest you to choose the mountain hill area for your camping because in this area you will see less crowd during this peak period. Listening to birdsong and watching a sunset or sunrise will really refresh your mind.

Although camping is exciting, there are some possible disadvantages, such as safety concerns, because there are also some wild animals that can harm you. Secondly, weather conditions can also ruin your experience. Lastly, while making your tent, it is possible to get some injuries, so be careful.

I will try to join you during this summer, so do not worry, we will manage together, and I assure you that you will not regret your decision and we will make memories by photography.

I hope my letter will help you to be confident about your decision.

Take care

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the appeal of camping, describing potential disadvantages, and confirming your intention to join your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being informal and supportive. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for example, explaining the psychological benefits of disconnecting from technology or the specific joy of sleeping under the stars. However, you have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother, as some sentences feel slightly disconnected. Overall, the structure is sound and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'peak period', 'safety concerns', and 'refresh your mind' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'make your tent' (usually 'pitch' or 'set up') and 'mountain hill area' (which is slightly redundant). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives would help elevate the response to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I really suggest you to choose' (should be 'I suggest that you choose' or 'I suggest choosing') and 'make memories by photography' (should be 'through photography'). These errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more varied complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
