Student answer (Band 7.5)

Hello Gurpreet,

How’re you doing? It’s been a long time since we last caught up. I heard from Simran that you’re planning to go camping this summer. I was actually surprised since you don’t like camping. What made you change your mind?

However, I know, you would definitely enjoy the holiday. The natural scenic views, cool breeze and open dark sky full of stars will serve you the best experience of your life. Moreover, if you’ve a good company, the entire journey will be even more memorable.

On the contrary, a few demerits can also be considered of camping. The primary one is mosquitos and filthy environment. Some camp grounds aren’t cleaned regularly, leading to bees and mosquitos growth in the area. Therefore, pick your camping ground wisely. What’s more, bears and other wild animals are also commonly seen in the places; thus, take good care of yourself and always stay in a group.

Furthermore, I’ve also been trying to get my summer vacation the same time of your holiday so that we can enjoy together. You know, I’m a fond of camping. If my vacation approves, I’ll see you on the trip.

I hope you’ll have a great time on your first camping.

Love

Komal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain why camping is enjoyable, provide relevant disadvantages such as insects and wildlife, and confirm your interest in joining your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for example, by contrasting the peace of nature with the stress of city life—to ensure the ideas are fully developed rather than just listed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For instance, 'On the contrary' is used to introduce disadvantages, but it is not the most natural choice here; 'On the other hand' or 'However' would be more suitable. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'memorable', 'demerits', and 'scenic views'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'bees and mosquitos growth' (should be 'the growth of bees and mosquitoes') and 'If my vacation approves' (should be 'If my vacation request is approved'). These errors do not impede communication, but they show a need for more precise control over collocations and passive voice constructions to reach the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I’m a fond of camping' (should be 'I am fond of') and 'get my summer vacation the same time of your holiday' (should be 'at the same time as'). Additionally, 'if you’ve a good company' is slightly awkward; 'if you have good company' is more natural. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader, and your meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
