Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Akhil,

I hope you are doing well! I am excited that finally you planned for a camping holiday. I know you will really enjoy this holiday.

Since college days, I know you always love nature and this experience will definitely make your holiday memorable. Additionally, you will most likely see stargazying while camping, which is wonderful experience.

Despite the advantages, you need to be cautious about the challenges which you can face during camping like mosquitoes and wild animals. Make sure you take necessary precautions ahead before travelling.

I would really love to plan for camping this summer with you. As, it will be fun and we can live our past again with lots of fun. I hope you would take some time and plan for the holiday. Do let me know as we need to book camping ground ahead due to peak season.

Looking forward to hearing back from you. lots of love!

With love,

Payal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully explain why your friend would enjoy camping, mention potential drawbacks like mosquitoes, and confirm your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention stargazing, expanding slightly more on the 'why' or the specific atmosphere would have provided a more comprehensive response. The letter is well-structured and addresses the requirements clearly, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Despite the advantages', and 'As', which help connect your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, ensuring the reader can easily understand the purpose and content of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'cautious about the challenges' and 'necessary precautions' are used correctly. There are some minor errors, such as 'stargazying' (spelling) and 'live our past again' (which is slightly unnatural phrasing). While you use some good vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler words. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more idiomatic expressions or precise collocations related to travel and outdoor activities.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'finally you planned' (should be 'you have finally planned') and 'ahead before travelling' (redundant). The sentence 'As, it will be fun' is a fragment and should be connected to the previous or following clause. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help improve your score in this area.
