Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope this letter finds you in good spirits, its been a long time we caught up. I really miss our college days when we go for outings on the weekends.

When I received your letter I was quite surprised that you are thinking to go on a camping holiday this summer, I know you are always afraid to spend nights outside under the sky. Although, last summer I went for camping with my office colleagues and it was a thrilling experience at Tobermory because of the arrangements at this location. So, you will definitely enjoy this camping if you are thinking to visit this place.

Despite, the enjoyments there are some possibilities you could face trouble while finding a spot to build a tent or sometimes restrooms are far from the location where you are . I would suggest you to arrive early so that you can locate a best place for camping with wonderful views.

If you wish I would be delighted to join you in this camping as I am aware about this location and it would be the best opportunity to spend time together and recall college memories. Please let me know the exact date so that I could take some time off from work and join you.

I can't wait to hear from you soon.

Take care,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified specific disadvantages like finding a spot and restroom access, and clearly stated your willingness to join. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for instance, by describing the specific benefits of nature or the relaxation aspect in more detail. However, the response is well-developed and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on one of the required points, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Despite,' 'Although,' and 'So,' which help connect your thoughts. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as starting a sentence with 'Despite, the enjoyments...' which is grammatically awkward. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used naturally would enhance the flow of your writing. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some good phrases like 'thrilling experience' and 'take some time off.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'thinking to go' (should be 'thinking of going') and 'I am aware about this location' (should be 'I am familiar with this location'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise' at a higher level. Expanding your range to include more natural collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'its been a long time we caught up' (missing 'since'), 'you are always afraid to spend' (should be 'afraid of spending'), and 'locate a best place' (should be 'the best place'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as comma splices in the second paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and articles.
