Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mohi,

I hope you're doing well. I am just writing this letter to suggest you that you should definitely go for camping this summer.

As I know, this is a first time when you are thinking to go somewhere for enjoying holiday. Shimla, which is known as a hill station, would be the best place for summer camping. I personally think you will enjoy a lot and it would be a great experience of your life.

Undoubtedly, there might be some risks, especially during travelling, because of the way, which is like a snake. I mean to say, you have to drive very carefully. Apart from that, it can be quite expensive as well. So make sure you can prepare your budget accordingly.

I would like to join you and will let you know about my final decision soon.

Keep in touch.

Kamal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and stating your availability. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of your ideas. For example, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy camping is quite brief. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detail or personal anecdotes to meet the length requirement and provide a more fully developed response. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, but the lack of length prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Apart from that' and 'As I know' to link ideas. However, the flow is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your transitions between sentences are smoother. The overall structure is clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, which is a strength of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'undoubtedly' and 'hill station'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'suggest you that you should definitely go for camping' (should be 'suggest that you go camping') and 'the way, which is like a snake' (a more natural phrasing would be 'winding roads'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptive language would help improve your score. The current range is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'this is a first time when you are thinking to go' (should be 'the first time you have thought about going') and 'enjoy a lot' (which needs an object, e.g., 'enjoy yourself'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help you achieve a higher score.
