Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sam,
I hope you are doing well. I just came to know that you are interested in a camping holiday for the first time this summer.
To begin with, I think you will really enjoy that place because it is close to nature, and you can click pictures for your next college project. It will not only be a marvellous experience but also a wonderful learning lesson.
However, you need to keep an eye on some important precautions. There will be bugs around the camp, so my suggestion is to keep bug spray handy. Moreover, choose a site where you will always be out of danger. The most significant thing is to never play very, very loud music because it will affect their natural habitat.
At the end, I would like to go with you. We will fix a date for camping and then prepare accordingly. Some of my friends from my placement will also join us. It would be a very fun-filled vacation.
With regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant disadvantages (bugs and noise control), and confirmed your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, you could develop your ideas further; for example, instead of just mentioning 'bugs', you could elaborate on the experience of being outdoors or the specific equipment needed. The ideas are relevant, but some sections, such as the advice on noise, could be more clearly linked to the friend's experience rather than the general environment.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a concluding paragraph. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the letter reads naturally. To improve, ensure that the transition between the disadvantages and the final invitation is slightly more fluid, as the shift from 'never play loud music' to 'I would like to go with you' is a bit abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'marvellous experience', 'natural habitat', and 'fun-filled vacation' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There is some repetition of simple words, and some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'wonderful learning lesson' (a 'valuable learning experience' would be more idiomatic). You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to camping, which helps in communicating your ideas effectively. Expanding your range of collocations would help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good control of sentence structure, using a mix of simple and complex sentences. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'I just came to know' (a more natural phrasing would be 'I just heard' or 'I just found out') and 'At the end' (which should be 'In the end' or 'Finally'). These errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
