Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear friend,

I hope you are doing well. I received your letter and realized you are planning for camping. Firstly, this weather is perfect for camping, I remember last year I went around same time in Whistler. The hike was 6 hours long and I camp after that overnight.

The view was exquisite and I catch a rabbit too for my dinner, it was a wild experience.

You are going for camping in Whistler too, I can suggest you few things that will make your trip smooth.

Try to take the early morning bus instead of driving your car. You can save more energy and enjoy the view while riding. I would suggest you carry couple bottles of mosquito repellent, sunscreen, extra water, lighter, flashlights, rope, and snacks to eat while hiking.

There are couple of cafe in the beginning of the road and washroom, try to get relieve yourself first and buy some snacks you like.

However whole journey will be filled with strangers but once day end and you will camping it will be quiet, the only sound you will hear it will be wildlife.

Next morning you can take the same bus you arrived. It will wait for the overnight traveler's for almost an hour.

Feel free to ask me anything.

I hope your journey will be soothing, I will wait for your reply.

Eager to know about your experience.

Your Faithful,

Maryam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, described some disadvantages (such as the presence of strangers and the need for preparation), and clearly stated your willingness to join. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the mention of 'catching a rabbit' is a bit unusual and lacks context, and the description of disadvantages could be more detailed to show a better grasp of the potential challenges of camping. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'However', and 'Next morning' to link your points. However, the paragraphing is quite fragmented, with many short, single-sentence paragraphs that disrupt the flow. To improve, you should group related ideas into longer, more cohesive paragraphs. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between your past experience and the advice for your friend's upcoming trip. Improving the use of linking words would help the text feel more unified.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'exquisite', 'repellent', and 'wildlife' effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'get relieve yourself' (should be 'relieve yourself') and 'overnight traveler's' (incorrect use of the apostrophe). While you attempt to use some descriptive language, the overall range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing, such as using 'camping' multiple times in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect readability. Examples include 'I camp after that' (tense error, should be 'camped'), 'I catch a rabbit' (tense error, should be 'caught'), and 'the only sound you will hear it will be' (redundant pronoun). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with commas and apostrophes. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
