Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ali,
I am very excited to hear about your plan for a camping holiday this summer. Since its going to be your first camping experience, I am sure that you are going to have a lot of fun. I know that you like nature and a peaceful environment, hence this holiday would be perfect for you. It will give you a healthy and much needed break from the boring routine and noisy city life.
However, there are some things that I want to warn you about before the holiday. First of all, is the unpredictable weather due to which camping might not be much fun. Also since you are going to be in the woods, there will definitely be a lot of insects and other wildlife creatures, about which you will have to be careful.
I would have loved to join you on this trip but unfortunately I have to work on a very important project.
I hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,
Ifra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified potential disadvantages like weather and insects, and clearly stated that you cannot join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or personal anecdotes to flesh out your points, such as describing a specific type of camping gear or a particular location you have visited. This would add depth to your response while maintaining the friendly, informal tone required for this task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'First of all', and 'Also' to transition between ideas. While the flow is clear and easy to follow, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences feels more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate for a short letter, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of your message without any confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'unpredictable weather' and 'peaceful environment'. The language is natural and appropriate for a personal letter. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To move into the higher bands, you should aim to incorporate more 'less common' lexical items or idiomatic expressions that are suitable for informal correspondence. For example, instead of 'boring routine', you could use 'the daily grind' or 'monotonous routine' to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of English vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, which makes your writing easy to read. There is a minor punctuation error in the first paragraph ('Since its going to be' should be 'Since it's going to be') and a slight awkwardness in the phrasing 'due to which camping might not be much fun'. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is generally strong. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent use of apostrophes for contractions and refining the structure of complex sentences to ensure they are grammatically precise.
