Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jyoti,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter in response to advice you need for your camping holiday for upcoming summer vacation.

I would recommend you to visit Forest Hill for camping experience. As I have a lot of experience about it, I think you will love this suggestion. I know very well about your tastes or choices. You like to explore the natural landscapes so it will be a good choice for you.

However, I would like to describe some negative aspects of camping such as threat to animal attack, scarcity of basic fundamental resources and hard to survive in extreme environmental conditions. For instance, I got sick during my last camping and it was very hard to find care. I stay without care for approximately three days and this make me suffer from hard time.

Despite the difficulties I encountered, I would love to try it again this summer. If you want me to accompany with you it will be great experience for both of us. Please let me know about your opinion regarding going together.

I will look forward for your response. See you soon.

Yours lovely,

Mittu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, outlined potential disadvantages, and clearly stated your interest in joining them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could provide more specific detail in your explanations; for example, when mentioning the 'scarcity of resources,' you could briefly elaborate on what those resources are (e.g., lack of electricity or clean water) to make your ideas more fully developed and engaging for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'However,' 'For instance,' and 'Despite,' which help the flow of information. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition between the benefits and the disadvantages is clear, but the connection between your personal experience and the advice could be more fluid. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'natural landscapes,' 'environmental conditions,' and 'scarcity.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'threat to animal attack' (should be 'threat of animal attacks') and 'Yours lovely' (which is not a standard closing; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes' would be more natural). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter in response to advice you need' (should be 'the advice you need'), 'this make me suffer' (should be 'this made me suffer'), and 'accompany with you' (should be 'accompany you'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
