Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sheetal,

Hi. How have you been? I am extremely sorry for not writing you before. Things have been pretty hectic on my side. I received you letter and happy to hear that you are planning to go for camping trip. I surely tell you that this trip would definitely leave lasting impression in your life.

Last year, I went to Tobermory with friends, we did camping there. The first thing that you would like is the magnificent view of the mountains that would be the best part of this trip. In addition, hiking, bonfire at midnight and staying in the camp, a great experience that everyone should experience once in the life. At start, I was shocked when I hear that you are going to explore camping site because I know that usually you would considered these trip as a wastage of time.

However, there are some drawbacks that you need to keep in mind during this trip. Firstly, as your group is planning to do camping far away from the hometown, it is better to have roaming data plan. because it is hard to get mobile connection in such areas. Secondly, buy some medicine and first aid kit for medical emergency. We faced a problem in our trip, one of our team members got injured and we had to stopped our camping immediately that ruin our mood.

I would be more happy if you will join this trip.

I hope to see you soon.

Best regards

Kajal Arora.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, describe potential disadvantages such as connectivity issues and safety concerns, and state your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, the advice regarding the first aid kit is a good point, but the explanation could be more detailed to fully satisfy the 'extended and supported' requirement for higher bands. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of content is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'However', and 'Firstly', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'At start, I was shocked when I hear that you are going to explore camping site'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, and the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'magnificent', 'hectic', and 'emergency'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice or collocation errors, such as 'do camping' (should be 'go camping'), 'wastage of time' (should be 'waste of time'), and 'ruin our mood' (should be 'ruined our mood'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. Examples include 'I surely tell you' (should be 'I can surely tell you'), 'when I hear' (should be 'when I heard'), 'you would considered' (should be 'you would consider'), and 'we had to stopped' (should be 'we had to stop'). These errors are noticeable, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your intended meaning.
