Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you are doing well. i heard that you are planning to go on a comping holiday for the first time this summer, and i wanted to share my thoughts with .
to be honest , i do not think you would enjoy camping very much because you usually prefer comfortable places and modern facilities.camping can be quite challenging as you have to sleep in tent. cook your own meals, and manage without many of the conveniences you have at home.
there are several disadvantages of camping holidays. firstly, the weather can be unpredictable, and heavy rain or extreme heat can make the experience uncomfortable. in addition, there may be insects, limited access to clean bathroom .these problems can make the holidays stressful rather then relaxing.
Although i have some concerns about comping, i would still like to go with you this summer because it could be fun experience and a good opportunity to spend time together. we could choose a well- organised campsite with better facilities to make our trip more enjoyable.
i hope you will consider my advice before making your final decision. i look forward to hearing what you decide.
Best wishes

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained why your friend might enjoy (or struggle with) camping, described the disadvantages clearly, and confirmed your willingness to join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are slightly more balanced; for instance, you could have elaborated more on the positive aspects of camping in the first paragraph to contrast with the disadvantages mentioned later. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the different points required by the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'in addition', and 'although' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, there are some minor issues with punctuation and capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I', and missing spaces after commas), which occasionally make the flow feel slightly mechanical. Improving the consistency of your punctuation and using a wider variety of linking phrases would help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'unpredictable', 'conveniences', and 'well-organised'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'comping' instead of 'camping' and 'rather then' instead of 'rather than'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for common spelling mistakes. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' clauses and complex sentences starting with 'Although'. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent errors in basic grammar and punctuation. Specifically, the consistent failure to capitalize the pronoun 'I' and the start of sentences, along with missing spaces after punctuation marks, affects the overall accuracy. There are also minor errors like 'in tent' (should be 'in a tent') and 'clean bathroom' (should be plural 'bathrooms'). Focusing on these basic grammatical conventions will significantly improve your score.
