Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Smith,
Hope you are doing well!
I heard that you are planning to go on a camping trip to Grouse Mountain for three days, and I am thrilled that you have decided to explore the beauty of B.C. Grouse Mountain is a fantastic place for camping, offering plenty to explore—including lakes, hiking trails, suspension bridges, breathtaking views, and incredible wildlife.
In particular, I highly recommend visiting Joffre Lakes. There are three main trails, each offering stunning views of different parts of the lakes. Once you reach the upper trail, you can see the entire lake from above, which is truly a heavenly experience.
However, there are a few disadvantages you should keep in mind. Since you will be tent camping, you might encounter wildlife such as bears, coyotes, or raccoons. You will need to take special precautions, especially after dark, and avoid wandering outside your tent at night.
Anyway, I would love to join you this summer! I can show you around so you don't miss any of the best viewpoints, trails, or lakes.
Warmly,
Manu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why your friend would enjoy camping by highlighting the natural beauty of Grouse Mountain, identified relevant disadvantages such as wildlife encounters, and confirmed your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on the 'why'—for example, explaining how the physical activity or the change of pace would specifically benefit your friend's well-being, which would add more depth to your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, and the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is handled smoothly using the cohesive device 'However'. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a natural structure. The referencing is clear throughout, and the flow of information is easy to follow. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect sentences within paragraphs, ensuring that the relationships between ideas are even more explicit.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'breathtaking views', 'incredible wildlife', and 'take special precautions'. The language is natural and fits the informal tone of a letter to a friend. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to describe the experience, such as 'serenity', 'unspoiled', or 'mitigate risks', which would demonstrate a more flexible and precise command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For instance, the use of participial phrases like 'offering plenty to explore' and conditional structures like 'so you don't miss' shows good control. There are no major errors that impede communication. To move into the higher band, ensure you are consistently using a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or more advanced relative clauses, and ensure that punctuation is used with complete precision throughout the text.
