Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Smith,

Hope you are doing well.

I heard that you are going for a camping holiday to grouse mountain for 3 days and I feel happy that finally you decided to explore the beauties of B.C. Grouse mountain is really worth to enjoying camping where there are lots to explore like lakes, trails, suspension bridges, scenic views, wild life experience and lots of other attractions.

I really want to tell about Geoffrey lake which is worth exploring which has three trails on each trail you can view breathtaking view of each part of lake when you reach upper trail the whole view of Geoffrey lake can be seen which is heavenly experience.

I would like to tell you about some disadvantages too, as it's a tent camping you can experience some kind of wildlife creatures like bear, coyote, racoon etc. You need to take special precautions while staying in tents especially after dark never go outside.

Anyways, this summer I too would join with you to give the best experience where you don't miss any view points and important trails, lakes etc.

Yours friendly,

Manu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing potential disadvantages, and confirming your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention wildlife as a disadvantage, the advice on precautions is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more descriptive detail or personal insight. The letter structure is clear, and the purpose is evident throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'anyways' and 'too', but the transitions between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is functional, though the connection between the introduction and the specific details about Geoffrey Lake feels a bit abrupt. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, ensuring that the relationship between sentences is always clear to the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, using terms like 'breathtaking', 'precautions', and 'attractions'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'worth to enjoying' (should be 'worth enjoying') and 'wild life creatures' (simply 'wildlife' is more natural). There is also some repetition of the word 'view'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives and idiomatic expressions suitable for an informal letter would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I heard that you are going for a camping holiday to grouse mountain' (capitalization and preposition usage) and 'I too would join with you' (slightly unnatural phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with commas. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures while reducing minor errors will help you achieve a higher score.
